John Coombes, John Sahadat, Cheryl (Chez) and Murray (Muzz) Shepard, John and Julie Wilkes.
This was the first of what we hope to be a complete re-run of the peregrinations in honour and tribute to Alan. On this walk, the three Johns and Julie were joined by two holidaying Australians, Muzz and Chez, whom we bumped into in Hound Tor car park and they stuck with us for the duration. A delightful couple, full of stories from Oz and keen to learn about life in the UK as they embarked upon their two month adventure in the old country. And what a way to kick off their holiday, and our series of hikes, with this delightful short walk in perfect weather conditions. We choose the time of this walk carefully as Alan had always told us of the display of bluebells that overtake Holwell Lawn for a couple of weeks in spring. Any worries that we may have got the timing wrong vanished just after Hound Tor, where patches of bluebells were scattered about and the distant purple/blue sheen to the right of Haytor hinted at the delights to come. On the climb up to Smallacombe Rocks we came across a small herd of cows and one in particular took an interest in us. To our rescue came Muzz who went full Australian cowboy to scare off the curious beef. As we climbed back up the valley from the clapper bridge over Becka Brook, the full majesty of the bluebell display became evident, not only by sight but also by smell. Alan had got it spot on!
