The original walk was done on one of the hottest days of 2021. Spin forward two years and although the UK had recently been experiencing a mini heatwave, we choose perhaps the worst day of the summer so far to retrace this route; not exactly cold, but wet and windy - so no friendly Australians to be seen this time! Visibility was not too bad though and our spirits were high as we consumed sandwiches at Combestone Tor before setting off.
Cows had taken up residence in the stone circle in the field above Sherberton so we couldn't get too close. The waterlogged path on the approach to the bridge across River Swincombe was avoided by a left turn across a field toward the ruined house (a blowing house?). We all did a rendition of Alan's famous Forsyth pose before crossing the bridge: see the pictures below.
The anomalies noted on the original peregrination were resolved this time: the hedge had been cut back at the gate out of the field near Hexworthy Bridge and this revealed a finger post marking the footpath, it must have been covered last time. And the cows were absent in the field going down to the stepping stones; as was the private sign.
The steep walk up from the stepping stones to Combestone Tor and the end of the walk was made less daunting by the appearance of a rainbow over the distant valley; or maybe it was the re-telling of the famous leat joke?
