Alan's Hexworthy Figure Eight
22 July 2021

This walk had field and moorland paths, bridleways and quiet lanes. The views were magnificent, aided by the perfect weather on this mid July day. As a figure of eight, either of the loops could be used for shorter walks in their own right.
The path down to the footbridge/ford over the River Swincombe was waterlogged. On a subsequent walk, Alan found that if you head east from the path, around the ruined building, it is much drier.
We encountered a couple of anomalies on this walk. When the path descends to Hexworthy bridge, we found ourselves in an enclosed field with no obvious gate or stile - despite the right of way being clearly marked on the OS map. We had to climb over a wall and if we were doing the walk in the opposite direction, it wouldn't have been at all obvious how to gain access to the path. Similar thing a bit farther on: at the bottom of the field (on that day, populated with cows) that drops down to the stepping stones at Dartmeet, there was a sign facing the other direction that claimed the obvious footpath to be private land with no access. Again, if we were walking the other way, confusion would have reigned.
Obvious to say, but the stepping stones should not be attempted after heavy rain.
"Look, it's a leat!". "Well, it's good; but I wouldn't go as far as Elite!"
This walk is heavily based upon walk 3 from the 'South Dartmoor Pub Walks' book by Bossiney Books.
