weather

We just can't catch a break with the weather in this series of walks: raining and windy again, especially the last part as we climbed from the road up to the old railway bed. Despite this, the visibility was not too bad (heavy fog seemed to be settling in to the lower reaches of South Moor as we drove up to Princetown) and there is lots to see on this walk: forest and moor, tor and pool as we follow the story of the Devonport Leat across to, and down from, Raddick Hill.

Charlie discovered a much easier way to make the diversion to Crazy Well Pool. Basically follow the well worn path up towards the cross that appears on the ridge to the right of the path (Crazy Well Cross!). Looking at the map, there appears to be at least two ways (other than the way we took) to return to the path, including taking Raddick Lane through the plantation. Maybe something to try next time: it would make CWP more integral to the route rather than a diversion.

Master navigator Charlie, also sorted out the path across the moorland between Black Tor falls and the road. Basically, follow the river from the falls to a small ford, then turn left, with your back to the river and climb the slope to the wide path that leads off north towards the radio tower.

We were all very wet at the end so decamped to the Plume of Feathers pub which is re-opened after a prolonged Covid closure (it was shut for the original peregrination). A busy pub with great beer (it is only brewed across the road!) and although the menu is limited, the food was lovely.
