John Coombes, John Sahadat and John Wilkes (The three amigos!).
Near perfect conditions for this re-walking of the penultimate of Alan's routes, this walk is great for animal sightings. As well as the usual assortment of birds and sheep, we came across a herd of Highland Cows (light brown with a fringe, and dangerous looking horns - see picture) grazing near a watering hole and later on, a solitary cow standing in a stream; assumingly to keep its hooves cool. The Alpacas in the farm just past Grimspound were standing near to the wall, making a nice photo opportunity. Not all wildlife is welcome though: on the back section through the farmland, we were plagued by horseflies trying to make us their dinner.
Navigation was better than on the original walk: we managed to stay on the trail at the Beehive Hut and although our route back up on to moorland from Heathercombe involved less Heather stomping, we still failed to find the correct path to take us into the west gate of Grimspound. When descending off the moor into the first farm, exit the farmyard by following the signs: in the little garden, pass to the right of the outbuilding and find the convenient rock to cross the stream, and then over the style into the onward field.
