Named for the three tors it encircles (Birch, Hookney and King) this walk is mainly open moorland with some testing uphill sections, farmland and farmyard, a short stretch of metalled road, woodland and, towards the end, a visit to the mystical Grimspound before an ascent back to the car for a visit to The Warren House Inn. We attempted this last September but it was too foggy to even see out of the car park at Bennett's Cross. This time we had perfect conditions and we were treated to host of wildlife on this beautiful spring day. We saw circling buzzards, a jumping deer, chittering skylarks, a pack of alpaca and a lone heron. Not to mention some cows with a sulking bull and many sheep including a curious ram.

While watching two buzzards gliding effortlessly in the light breeze, there was a roar from behind us and a military jet bolted past at great speed, not much higher than where the buzzards were previously playing. I'm not an expert in these sort of things but the plane was similar in size and shape, but not colour, to the type of aircraft used by the Red Arrows.

Not having a guide book to follow this time, we managed to lose the trail a few times. Right at the start, we took the wrong path at the Beehive Hut and ended up drifting towards Birch Tor before regaining our bearings. The trick here is to stay on the more established path after examining the interesting structure. The bridleway rising up from Heathercombe to Grimspound is marked incorrectly on the OS map and trying to follow it led us to stomp though masses of heather. Later inspection of the aerial view shows the actual path is a little to the south of that shown and would probably give an easier passage through this section.
