A combination of beautiful moorland, woodland and riverside walking along footpaths and quiet lanes. There are splendid views of both the deeply eroded Dart valley and the surrounding tors. The route starts at Bel Tor rather than the often busy Newbridge car park, thus giving the end of the walk a crescendo of spectacular views affordable from Dr Blackall's Drive. The walk winds its way through the villages of Ponsworthy and Leusden and along the riverside at Spitchwick, popular with picnickers and swimmers in the summer.
We did not take the alternative route shown on the map: it is there only to point out a much shorter walk that can be taken with Newbridge as a base. Useful, for instance, if you are looking for an excuse for a pint at The Tavistock Inn. If taking this route, be careful NOT to follow the path to the south of Leigh Tor (marked as the 'Two Moors Way' on the OS map): you will end up lost in tall ferns. Use the track that follows the boundary hedge.
This is heavily based upon walk 4 from the 'South Dartmoor Pub Walks' book by Bossiney Books.
